Here at Gays.com, Coming Out Day (held on Oct 11 every year) has a very special place in our hearts, and this year, it looks like it is going to be a very special day indeed.
In just another two weeks, thousands are expected to descend upon Washington, DC for the National Equality March to demand for full equality for all LGBT people in all matters governed by civil law in all 50 states now. The protest is the brainchild of leading gay rights activist Cleve Jones, friend and colleague of the late Harvey Milk.
Check out his speech announcing the protest at the Utah Pride Festival here:
We know, we know, times are bad and you’re worried about those bills and mortgage payments, but thankfully, organizers have announced discounted hotel stays, reduced Amtrak fares, charter bus trips, and ride-share information from various cities.
Organizers of the march say this protest is not the final destination but the “first step in building a national grassroots network that will continue organizing until we have achieved full equality”. While the fight is being taken to the federal government, NEM masterminds want to take this opportunity to build a network of activists across all 435 Congressional districts that will continue organizing beyond October. Gays.com believes that there is great power waiting to be harnessed through technology and social networks, and we want to contribute to helping our activists organize for the future.
