Tattoos have always been used to make a statement. In the past, they’ve been associated with a wide variety of different sub-cultures. They can denote belonging, whether that be to a class or a gang. Inscribe your own secret language and desires on to your skin and create your own work of art. Tribal tattoos are now particularly popular with gay men, and some are more inventive than others. Be as exotic or as prosaic as you like. Be mysterious with an ancient language daubed on your torso, or utterly blatant with the word ‘Sex’ emblazoned at the top of your arse.
Everyone remembers their first pubes sprouting, and that feeling of self-consciousness but also pride. But what do you then do with them? It’s different for all LGBT people. Some have an Amazonian bush, so wild and out of control that it would take nothing less than a sit-on mower to get it into shape. Fashions have changed over the years: increasing numbers of gay men now opt for the clippered look (a cardinal sin for bears though), while ladies’s front gardens can be shaped into Brazilians or the ‘Shaven Haven’. It all depends what you want stuck between your teeth.
